How to be an illustrator by Darrel Rees Rees, Darrel. London: Laurence King Publishing. First edition. Darrel Rees give advice and tips on how to become an illustrator. He talks about portfolios, how to acquire jobs, contacting, promoting yourself, etc. In this book he also interviews a few other illustrators, which give the reader different perspectives on how to be an illustrator.

It identifies that these decisions are personal and the illustrator will decide upon this. Rees begins to introduce that being an illustrator does not mean you need to draw in order to be considered a good illustrator.

The process an illustrator takes is a very personal instinct. This takes me back to having to keep an open mind. It will allow for a more diverse view on the world. Being open to researching and diving into new subjects.

Curiosity leads to play. As an illustrator I believe you have to practice play; playing with your ideas, different types of materials, size, technique, etc. Rees begins to talk about the importance of having a portfolio and website already prepared. He mentions have a physical and pdf form of a portfolio. He mentions to dismiss work you do not like from your portfolio.

I found this to be interesting because why would you showcase work you dislike? You could end up making similar work for a client and hate the entire process. Presentation is key in your portfolio. You want to show pride in you work, it will leave a client with a good impression of you.

Invest in your portfolio, after all you are trying to impress and promote your self. Also, it is good to keep an online portfolio, a PDF to be exact. These are extremely easy to attach on an email and send out to anyone. To me this is like having a CV, have it prepared and when an opportunity arises you are prepared to showcase and prove yourself to a client.

Lastly, a lot of the interviews and Rees himself continuously mention the importance of keeping an updated website. A website is such an easy thing to keep up to date with your current works, projects, etc. Its like having an online portfolio. Most clients will have a look at your website since its a very easy way to see your work. It is also important to keep it simple, simply showcase your work in a quick manner, this will give your client a good experience when viewing your work.

In conclusion, illustration is a very personal practice. But they way you create is entirely up to you and what you enjoy. This book showcased this to me as being an illustrator is how you portray yourself and your work. If you want to become a successful illustrator its an entirely self driven process, you might have help here and there, but it is up to you to get your name out there and acquire work.

How to be an Illustrator, Second Edition

I also liked the interviews from different illustrators or art directors, it was interesting to know their thoughts. I felt that reading this book has saved me a lot of time and that I have a clear vision now of the illustration as a business. Biased and pushy though! I felt very nervous after putting it down with the piece of advice you need to make it within the first 2 year of graduating otherwise you will be lost in a sea of graduates, Im one for realism but I find this take anxiety inducing and may make people lose sleep. A must read for budding illustrators though! Excellent in depth guide from the perspective of an editorial illustrator, nicely designed pages, informative catalogue of advice. This means the rules may be different for US-based folks, and therefore the book is less useful though it does lay out great tips about self-promotion!
